This is the route on the French-Spanish border taken by hundreds of Jews fleeing anti-semitic persecution. Guided by Lisa Fittko in 1939, they crossed the Pyrenees on foot over a discreet col. One of these Jews was Walter Benjamin. Fittko was following the route taken by General Enrique Lister’s Division during the Republican army’s retreat, but in the opposite direction. A route that had already been an old smugglers’ trail as well. The col, Nature’s accident allowing us to cross the mountains, becomes both witness and symbol of its very own physical and political duality. And its representation on a map (=) is the leitmotif for the markers unifying both sides today for the first time - 150 black marks, made with a nº30 brush, now show the way on this route between Banyuls and Portbou.

Esta es la ruta que realizaron cientos de judíos en su huida de la persecución antisemita por la frontera francoespañola, guiados por Lisa Fittko atravesaban a pie los Pirineos por un discreto collado. Uno de aquellos fue Walter Benjamin. Fittko seguía la misma ruta realizada en 1939 en sentido contrario por la división del General Enrique Líster durante la retirada del ejército republicano. Una ruta que había sido a su vez un antiguo sendero de contrabandistas. El collado, accidente natural que hace el paso entre montañas más accesible, se convierte en testigo y símbolo de esa dualidad física y política. Y su representación en el mapa (=) en el leitmotiv de la propia señalización que por primera vez unifica ambas vertientes. 150 marcas negras realizadas con un pincel nº30 señalan hoy esa ruta entre Banyuls y Portbou.
