[...] In the case of irene grau's construction season, this meaning of site-specific work is
transformed. Upon her arrival to Madison, her drifts through urban space and her
monochrome painter's gaze quickly led her to realize the intricate network of graffiti
which appeared drawing the city's ground with the snow melting and the arrival of the
warm season. This abstraction of the pictorial image of the urban ground riddled with
signs and markings, lines, arrows, crosses, in determined and prescribed colors, marked the beginning of a route of wandering by the artist along the city, picking up accidentally painted items, photographs of the markings and their interchanges with the
city’s living space together with the tracings of the shapes that those perfect monochrome paintings were acquiring in the urban land.
[...] Regardless of her wandering, irene grau quickly recognized an organizational system in
those markings, a pattern that allows to carry out a systematization process amid the
apparent and suggestive chaos of pictorial shapes. This intricate complex of signals
indeed corresponds to a real warning system, which was created after a block of flats
exploded in California in 1976 after the accidental cut of an oil pipe. [...] The work of irene grau rapidly takes on a sociological and political dimension. Graffiti,is now implanted in the system as the means by which a reality of our cities, an enunciation of our ways of life and buried under our feet, is brought to the surface.
[...] irene grau manages not only to pose a puzzle via the
tracings of the floor markings —perfectly mobile, perfectly reorganizable by the
spectator who visits the exhibition— but manages to abstract the system from its
function to turn it into a game, and its playful proposal helps to make the citizen
conscious of the images of the city. The visitor also becomes a contributor, with her call
to look for accidentally painted elements in order to take them to the museum space.
construction season does not end in the work of irene grau, but rather it fully engages
the community and becomes an exhibition that will remain eternally unfinished until its
closure.

[...] En el caso de construction season de irene grau, este sentido de obra site specific se
transforma. En su llegada a Madison, sus derivas por el espacio urbano y su mirada de pintora
de monocromos rápidamente la llevaron a darse cuenta de la intrincada red de graffitis que
aparecían dibujando el suelo de la ciudad con la desaparición de la nieve y la llegada de la
estación cálida. Esa abstracción de la imagen pictórica del suelo urbano plagado de señales e
indicaciones, líneas, flechas, cruces, en colores determinados y pautados, marcó el inicio de
una ruta de deambulación de la artista por la ciudad, recogiendo objetos accidentalmente
pintados, fotografías de las marcas y calcos de las formas que esas perfectas pinturas monocromas iban adquiriendo en el suelo urbano.
[...] A pesar de deambular, rápidamente reconoció un sistema organizativo en esas
marcas, una pauta que permite llevar a cabo un proceso de sistematización en medio del
aparente y sugerente caos de formas pictóricas. Ese intrincado complejo de señales
corresponde en efecto a un sistema de aviso real, constituido después que en 1976 un bloque
de viviendas explotase en California tras el corte accidental de una tubería de petróleo. [...] La obra de irene grau adquiere rápidamente una dimensión sociológica y política. El graffiti, se inserta ahora en el sistema como
medio mediante el cual traer a la superficie una realidad de nuestras ciudades, enunciadora de
nuestros modos de vida y enterrada bajo nuestros pies.
[...] irene grau consigue no solo plantear un puzle a través de los calcos de
las marcas del suelo, perfectamente móviles, perfectamente reorganizables por el espectador
que visita la exposición, sino que consigue abstraer el sistema de su función para convertirlo
en juego y su propuesta lúdica ayuda a que el ciudadano tome consciencia de las imágenes de
la ciudad. El visitante se convierte además en un aportador, con su llamada a buscar
accidentally painted elements para llevarlos al espacio del museo. construction season no
termina en el trabajo de irene grau sino que implica plenamente a la comunidad
convirtiéndose en una exposición que permanecerá eternamente inacabada hasta su clausura.
